Sylvia Cancino
AIA, NCARB
Principal, Education Studio Leader
Austin, Texas USA
Sylvia is inspired by the profound impact her work has on communities and on the lives of students, and she’s excited by the progress she’s seen over her 26-year career. “Schools are no longer boxes with few windows,” she says. “They are significant architecture with lots of character and design considerations.” Sylvia’s entire career has been dedicated to PK-12 educational design projects across central Texas. Because of her deep knowledge of the sector and of the region’s schools, she’s built strong relationships with her clients over the years.
As our Austin Education Studio Leader, Sylvia’s continued to build on her reputation for the efficient delivery of projects. She’s managed the design and construction of a variety of educational facilities, including long-range facility planning, bond planning, and district-wide facility assessments. Sylvia works closely with members of the client-design team to ensure that all criteria and functional requirements defined in a project’s goals are addressed and that the scope, budget, and schedule are met. She’s most proud of her team’s work on Cypress Springs Elementary School for Drippings Springs ISD for how it inspires Texas hill country architecture.
Sylvia finds joy wherever she can: traveling, spending time with her teenage daughter, reading, visiting wineries and breweries, and hitting the trail. “I am a weekend Jeep Wrangler trail driving enthusiast,” she says.
