No Work, All Playa
In its ongoing partnership with Airport Dimensions and JPMorgan Chase, Corgan designed the new Sapphire Lounge by The Club at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX). Situated in Terminal 4’s S-1 concourse, the 3,500 square-foot space takes its inspiration from the desert playa that southern Arizona is known for. Even with its small size, the lounge features a full bar, food servery and beverage station, bar lounge, cozy work lounge, restrooms, and seating both indoors and “outdoors” on the patio. Corgan collaborated closely with the client to maximize the impact of the lounge’s small footprint.
Southwest Luxury
The lounge design works harmoniously with the southwest-inspired S-1 concourse. The cracked-earth terminal terrazzo pattern and sand-dune ceiling contrast nicely with the Sapphire lounge’s luxurious finishes, from the plush fabrics to the gilded bar canopy to the marble back splash at the beverage station. Additionally, the art curation and abundant plants throughout the space echo Arizona’s natural landscape.
From Airstream to Jetstream
The most notable feature of the lounge is the original 1963 Airstream trailer, an eye-catching design feature that is situated on the public-facing patio portion of the space. Originally built in Arizona, the Airstream was lifted into the terminal via crane, brought through security, and rolled into place between the last flight of the night and first morning flight. The trailer not only functions as a food truck for the lounge, serving hot food to complement the ready-to-go options but also creates a connection to the local lifestyle in the desert.
The glamorous bar is at the heart of the lounge, with the ribbon window at the back of the bar offering panoramic views of both the airfield and Phoenix’s South Mountain in the distance. The patio area also takes advantage of the natural light that floods the concourse via the atrium.
A more secluded work lounge provides tables, comfortable seating, and charging ports for travelers who want a quieter area to focus and relax. This zone also features a water vapor fireplace, local art, and custom millwork shelves filled with meticulously curated books and curios to enhance the cozy feeling of the space. The amenities are completed with gender-neutral restrooms and a full servery. In blending luxurious finishes with desert-inspired design, the Chase Sapphire Lounge offers travelers a serene and stylish escape, turning a brief stop into a memorable desert oasis.
