Transforming a former trampoline park into an innovative research center.
To establish its presence as a leader of innovative research and diagnosis in Phoenix, Liver Health hired Corgan to assist them in finding a suitable site for their corporate headquarters. The search led them to take an unusual step — securing a former trampoline park in a suburban strip mall.
Corgan led a radical transformation of the space and converted the adventure party venue that once housed a gymnasium and swimming pool into professional corporate offices, research and imaging labs — with 73% of the space dedicated to research for conditions associated with liver disease — as well as two compound pharmacies, and an overnight suite for clinical sleep trials.
Converting an industrial building into an imaging clinic and sleep center
The complex renovation restructured the entry, replacing once tiny openings with floor-to-ceiling windows, creating a biophilic atrium. Expansive glazing floods the lobby with abundant light for a welcoming arrival experience. Visitors enter the lobby and are ushered past the reception desk into a spacious waiting room. To create more intimacy within the high bays, cloud drop ceilings and curved elements soften and quiet the space.
Acoustic reinforcements featuring baffled ceilings, plush carpeting, and insulated wall treatments reduce reverberation and absorb noise. A soothing color pallet with warm woods, dark ceilings, and pendant light fixtures further calm and define the space. The specifically designed facility serves as a recruitment tool for participants and researchers and provides a peaceful environment for overnight guests.
Cutting-edge research and a sleep trial clinic
The design pays particular attention to amenities and services to support a positive experience for participants spending extended periods of time. The floorplan divides public and private spaces, making way for a sleep testing center with individual rooms with two-way observation mirrors. A suite with soft furnishings and nature-inspired artwork creates a peaceful environment for patients and their families to meet with physicians and doubles as an impromptu collaborative meeting room.. Individual bedrooms and private showers and dressing rooms along with breakrooms with kitchen pantries offer catered meals to accommodate overnight guests.
A separate wing houses research laboratories with advanced imaging equipment to conduct MRI, CT, X-ray and DEXA scans. The administration space includes workstations and a separate call center to conduct research and make appointments. A conference room with an operable wall provides flexibility to host training and meetings. Providing cutting-edge research to advance knowledge for liver disease, the clinic repurposes healthcare in an unlikely space and serves as a model for future research facilities. The conversion not only brought research labs and a sleep clinic to the region but breaths new life into the strip mall, transforming the center and the community.
