Hobby Airport’s $470 million expansion underway, expected to be complete in 2027
The expansion of William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) is now underway, according to the Houston Airport System.
Houston Airports and Southwest Airlines Co. (NYSE: LUV) celebrated the project at a Nov. 14 event, marking “a major milestone in the continued growth and enhancement” of Hobby.
The project will expand the airport’s West Concourse, which Southwest Airlines opened in 2015. It will add seven gates, a new baggage-handling system, more carousels at baggage claim and a protective canopy connecting the terminal to the parking garage.
In a March 2023 presentation from Jonathan Massey, principal aviation sector leader for Dallas-based Corgan — the architectural firm providing services to Southwest — he said a new two-story baggage system building will be built with screening and support spaces to accommodate the increase in passengers flying through the expanded airport.
